We are seeking a board-certified General Surgeon for locum tenens coverage at a 49-bed hospital located in Western Colorado, near Grand Junction. This is an excellent opportunity to support a tight-knit, rural community with a robust support team and modern facilities.
Coverage Dates
- October 6–13
- November 22–30
- December 22–28
Daily patient rounding and 24-hour call coverage (on-call from a hospital-owned apartment)
Surgical consults for emergency medicine physicians
Perform general surgical procedures, including endoscopies and colonoscopies
Typical cases: Falls from standing, motor vehicle accidents, hunting/gunshot wounds (rare), agricultural-related injuries (horse/cow accidents), sports injuries, gallbladder and appendix injuries
No office visits or scheduled surgeries
No vascular, bariatric, thoracic surgeries, or major burns (major burns are transferred to a burn center)
No head bleeds, stroke patients, or spinal injuries (these are not managed at this facility)
Surgical case volume: Approximately 189 per month
Scope volume: Approximately 100 per month
Hospital & Team Details
Level IV Trauma Center (ATLS certification required)
EMR: Meditech
Facility: 49 beds, 12 ED treatment rooms, 4 operating rooms, 6-bed ICU, 6 Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum beds, 1 c-section suite in the OB unit
24/7 Hospitalist program: Surgical patients are monitored overnight by an internist. The surgeon is responsible for consults, procedures, and admissions, with the hospitalist serving as a care partner for nighttime monitoring.
Strong backup specialties: Orthopedics, urology, ophthalmology, pulmonology, obstetrics, and pediatrics
CRNA team: 5 CRNAs available and always on call
Trauma II facility access: 50 minutes by ground transport or 15 minutes by air to Grand Junction
