Experience

  • Pediatric cardiac acute care experience strongly preferred
  • Comfortable with step-down/ACCU-level patients and high-acuity management

Facility & Setting

  • Children’s Hospital
  • Acute Cardiac Care Unit (ACCU) – 44 beds
    • Higher-acuity step-down unit for pediatric cardiac patients
    • Collaborative model: APPs + residents + fellows + attending physicians

Clinical Scope

  • Pre- and post-operative general cardiology
  • Pediatric heart failure and transplant care
  • Management of congenital and acquired cardiac conditions
  • Patients may require:
    • Stable VADs
    • Tracheostomy/ventilator support
    • Inotropic infusions (Milrinone, Dopamine)
    • Chest tube management/removal
    • External pacing wires (AAI mode)
    • Stable peritoneal dialysis

Staffing & Ratios

  • Day Shift: 6–7 patients per provider; 7–8 total providers (weekdays & weekends)
  • Night Shift: Up to 15 patients per provider; 3 total providers (2 APPs, 1 resident)

Rounds & Care Model

  • Three Teams: Train (General Cardiology), Star (General Cardiology), Balloon (Heart Failure/Heart Transplant)
  • APPs rotate across teams, providing care and writing daily notes
  • Supervision provided by cardiology fellows and attendings

Documentation

  • Daily notes required for all patients
