Locums – Altoona, Pennsylvania – Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Job

• Locum tenens opportunity

• Seeking a board certified or truly board eligible Physician Assistant

• Physician Assistants only – Nurse Practitioners cannot be considered

• Emergency Medicine experience required

• Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department experience

• ASAP start with ongoing coverage needs

• Seeking coverage for approximately 6–12 shifts per month

• Must be willing to work night shifts

• Shift options:

  • 7:00 AM–7:00 PM

  • 9:00 AM–9:00 PM

  • 7:00 PM–7:00 AM

• Level III Trauma Center

• Must have an active Pennsylvania license

• Must be local enough to drive to the facility

• Required certifications:

  • ACLS

  • BLS

  • PALS

  • Certifications must be through the American Heart Association or Red Cross

  • Stroke certification required

  • NIHSS must be maintained annually

  • Annual Stroke CME required

  • Annual EMTALA education required

• ATLS not required

• No call

• May be required to assist with triage/tech responsibilities

• PAs typically see a wide variety of Emergency Department patients with a focus on lower-acuity cases

• Typical procedures include:

  • Laceration repairs

  • Incision and drainage

• PAs are expected to evaluate a broad range of patient complaints

• Attending physicians generally manage critically ill patients and evaluate STEMI and stroke patients

• PAs are not expected to perform invasive procedures such as central lines, intubations, or lumbar punctures

• Patient population:

  • Approximately 80% adults

  • Approximately 20% pediatrics

• Average volume: 1–2 patients per hour, per provider

• PAs will not work solo

• Physician coverage is always present overnight

• 24/7 in-house trauma service also provides acute care general surgery consultations

• Extensive specialty backup available, including Neurology, Cardiology, OB/GYN, Orthopedics, GI, Neurosurgery, CT Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Intensivist services, Pediatric Hospitalist services, and more

• 24/7 crisis counselors available in the ED to evaluate psychiatric patients

• EMR: Cerner
