CALL / SCHEDULE

• 24-hour in-house call: 7:00 AM – 7:00 AM
• On-call requirement: Yes
• Weekend coverage: Yes
• Call rooms: Available
• Locum physician is the sole OB physician on site during the 24-hour shift
• Physicians cannot work more than two consecutive 24-hour shifts

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manage labor and perform deliveries
• Cover unassigned deliveries and emergent cases
• Provide support for the OBED and L&D units
• Rapidly evaluate and manage obstetric patients presenting to the OB Emergency Department
• Initiate care within 30 minutes and independently assess patients
• Manage high-acuity obstetric cases
• Coordinate admissions, transfers, and operative care
• Provide antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care for unassigned and transfer patients
• Manage labor, including fetal monitoring, procedures, and delivery assistance
• Provide courtesy deliveries when the primary OB/GYN is unavailable
• Serve as clinical lead during obstetric emergencies and rapid response events
• Remain available for OB consultations
• Collaborate with midwives on birth planning and delivery of higher-risk or complex patients
• VBAC deliveries: Yes
• Twin deliveries: Yes
• Supervise residents and medical students
• Maintain clear communication and handoffs
• Complete documentation and order entry in Epic
• No GYN responsibilities

• OBED: 8 beds
• Annual deliveries: 2,900+
• OBED visits: Approximately 1,389/year
• OBED visits resulting in deliveries: Approximately 463/year
• Medical imaging available
• Lab and pharmacy available
• Epic EMR
• MFM available on call
• Residents are on site
• OB Hospitalist is not responsible for supervising residents
• No APP supervision required
• No midwives employed directly; affiliated midwives may partner with the OB Hospitalist for birth planning and deliveries
• Only maternity transport team in Iowa
