RecruitWell is seeking an experienced Emergency Medicine physician to serve as a Site Medical Director for a high-acuity Emergency Department in the Hudson Valley region of New York.
This is an excellent leadership opportunity for a physician who enjoys clinical practice while helping shape department strategy, strengthen operational performance, support provider and nursing collaboration, and advance quality initiatives. The Site Medical Director will join an established emergency medicine team and have the opportunity to influence the continued growth and evolution of the department.
Position Highlights
Leadership opportunity within a busy Emergency Department with approximately 55,000 annual patient visits
Level III Trauma Center environment
Approximately 15%–20% pediatric patient volume
23 Emergency Department beds plus 8 Fast Track beds
EPIC EMR
Strong physician and advanced practice provider staffing model
53 hours of physician coverage and 37 hours of APP coverage daily
Existing team of 13 full-time emergency medicine physicians and 9 full-time APPs
New Emergency Department development/expansion planned
Opportunity to help shape the future emergency medicine team and department operations
Teaching opportunities through Internal Medicine residency rotations
Strong data analytics support and a focus on quality, clinical excellence, and operational improvement
Collaborative relationships among the emergency medicine group, hospital leadership, nursing leadership, and system resources
Recent long-term contract extension supporting team stability and future growth
Clinical Environment
The department is implementing a strengthened staffing model designed to lower provider workload from approximately 2.3 patients per hour to a target of 2.0 patients per hour.
The Site Medical Director will have the opportunity to work closely with clinical and nursing leadership to improve throughput, support nursing onboarding and development, address boarding and hallway-bed challenges, optimize Fast Track utilization, and align departmental performance with nationally recognized benchmarks.
The role is ideal for a physician who is comfortable practicing in a high-acuity environment and is motivated by the opportunity to lead meaningful operational and clinical improvements.
Compensation and Benefits
Competitive total compensation package estimated at $375,000–$475,000 annually
Base clinical compensation of $225 per hour for day shifts
$240 per hour for night shifts, including a $15 per hour night differential
Site Medical Director stipend of $290,000 annually
$60,000 start-date bonus for a two-year commitment, with flexibility for qualified Medical Director candidates subject to approval
Holiday pay
$3,000 annual BERA allowance
401(k) plan and deferred compensation plan
Eligibility for tiered benefit plans
W-2 employment status with a comprehensive benefits package
Leadership and Clinical Schedule
The strength of the existing staffing model allows the Site Medical Director to maintain a lower clinical-hours commitment of approximately 48 to 72 hours per month. This structure gives the Medical Director dedicated capacity to focus on:
Department strategy and operational planning
Provider engagement, recruitment, onboarding, and retention
Quality, safety, and patient-experience initiatives
Clinical workflow and throughput improvement
Performance metrics, reporting, and accountability
Collaboration between emergency medicine clinicians, nursing, hospitalists, specialists, and hospital administration
Development of a high-performing, collegial emergency medicine team
Candidate Qualifications
Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine
Active or eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in New York
Prior emergency medicine leadership experience strongly preferred
Demonstrated ability to lead physicians and APPs in a collaborative, high-acuity clinical environment
Strong communication, operational, quality-improvement, and team-development skills
Interest in participating in departmental growth, staffing strategy, process improvement, and clinical excellence initiatives
